Choosing a Health Care Provider Who Matches Your Parenting Philosophies

Hi, my name is Katlyn. As a mum of four kids, I take their health very seriously. However, I also take my own parenting philosophies seriously. Because of that, I have always attempted to find doctors and health care providers who resonate with my style. That includes everything from their thoughts on how often to prescribe medication to how they speak to my children. If you want tips on finding the perfect healthcare provider, please explore these posts. They contain everything I have learned over the years, and I hope my experiences can really help other mums and families! Take Care, Katlyn.

Knowing These Signs of Parathyroid Cancer Could Save Your Life

Zoey Olson

Whilst parathyroid cancer can painful and frightening, it's also one of the most treatable types of cancer. The key to properly treating parathyroid cancer is discovering it early so that immediate and aggressive treatment can begin. Often, the best treatment is a surgical one. Parathyroid surgeons can extract cancerous tissue and prevent the cancer from spreading in many cases, but to do so, it's important that the cancer is identified as soon as possible. Here are the signs of parathyroid cancer to look out for.

The Early Signs of Parathyroid Cancer

In the early stages of parathyroid cancer, the indicators of the disease are less obvious. The symptoms are often physical, but may not necessarily be visually obvious. Some signs to watch for include:

  • Weakness
  • Exhaustion after even minor physical exertion
  • Frequent vomiting for unexplained reasons
  • Chronic constipation
  • Extreme thirst that can't be adequately quenched
  • Reduction in appetite
  • Significant unintended weight loss

It's possible to have just one or two of these signs, but many patients experience all or nearly all of these signs in the early stages of parathyroid cancer. Whilst these symptoms can also be indicative of other diseases and illnesses, any disease or illness with these symptoms warrants quick attention from your physician.

The Late Stage Signs of Parathyroid Cancer

In the later stages of parathyroid cancer, a mass in the neck may be obvious. This mass typically bulges out on one side of the neck. The neck bulge is frequently reddened and raw looking, although it might be the same colour as the skin surrounding it. Whilst a neck mass is usually obvious in the late stages of parathyroid cancer, it's also possible that the neck may simply look swollen and inflamed overall.

Many patients notice not only the neck mass but also other symptoms including:

  • Pain whilst swallowing
  • Hoarse voice
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Sore throat and neck

All of the signs above are cause for immediate medical attention. If you notice the signs of late stage parathyroid cancer, remember that there is still help available even though you may not have detected it early. By working with skilled and experienced parathyroid surgeons, your chances for beating the disease may still be quite good, but ignoring it will do nothing but harm.

Parathyroid cancer can cause serious damage and can even be deadly, but with prompt attention to any symptoms, it doesn't have to be. Australia is one of the top eight countries worldwide in terms of cancer survival rates, so take advantage of that by contacting your doctor straight away if you see any of the signs discussed above.
